Bus Route Delays and Cancellations

​​​​​​Although we do our best to ensure bus routes operate on schedule, situations arise which may contribute to delays or, in rare circumstances, the cancellation of a bus route. Jay Schools may be required to temporarily cancel or delay bus routes due to a temporary lack of available drivers, bus mechanical issues, unplanned route detours, or other unforeseen reasons. 

Delayed or Canceled Bus Route procedures

  1. Canceled bus routes and delays of 15 minutes or more will be announced on WPGW. Automated phone calls and text will be sent to affected parents with relevant information. Parents/guardians will be notified as soon as possible about bus route delays or cancellations.

  2. Parents or caregivers' contact information must be accurately recorded in the Skyward student information system in order to receive email, text alerts or phone calls regarding their child's school bus route.

  3. A bus route may be canceled or delayed for the morning route, afternoon route or the entire day. If a P.M. route delay is expected to be lengthy, parents/guardians may pick up their children at the school or a designated location.

  4. Parents should develop a safety plan and ensure their children understand what to do if the school bus is late or does not arrive at the bus stop.

Family Safety Plan

  1. Teach your child traffic safety rules and whether driving or walking, practice and establish a safe route for them to get to and from the bus stop.

  2. Discuss the bus rider rules and how to be safe at the bus stop while waiting for the school bus to arrive.

  3. Explain that the bus may be delayed and they may have to wait up to 15 minutes for the bus to arrive.

  4. Have a safe location for your child to return to (home or a neighbor's), in the event the school bus does not arrive after 15 minutes or is canceled.

  5. Provide your child with the phone number to Jay Schools Transportation at 260-726-9605 and provide an alternate contact for your child to call in an emergency.

  6. Create alternative travel and/or care arrangements for when the bus is canceled.
