Today we are pleased to share two events from Mrs. Gelzleichter's Spanish classes. First, the Spanish III curriculum includes a lesson on conservation, so Mrs. Gelzleichter invited Bettie Jacobs to speak on recycling. She visited on January 27 and spoke to all of the classes. The photo features an 8th-grade Spanish I class. Mrs. Gelzleichter reports that the students loved Bettie (especially when she rewarded them with candy). They had several questions for her, and she was able to answer them all! We are always grateful to have support from our community experts! Thank you, Mrs. Jacobs, for sharing your time with our students. Additionally, Spanish IV students visited the Museum of Art in Ft. Wayne back on Nov. 20. While they waited for their tour to begin, they were invited to visit the Allen County Public Library. Students were able to visit the various areas of the library and view different collections, including the Center for Genealogical Research and the Rollins Center, which houses the two-dimensional artifacts from the Abraham Lincoln collection.

It has been a busy yet very successful couple of months for the JC Jr.-Sr. High Student Council, from “quack attacking” teachers' classrooms and “chucking ducks” at a basketball game to raise funds for the Jay County Cancer Society to collecting monetary donations and food for the canned food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. Additionally, generous donations from McDonald’s and Scooters were presented to our traffic guards. These men serve our students and faculty in many ways. They brave the weather and are always present to help guide traffic to ensure our students' safety. We appreciate all that our sheriff, officers, and custodians do to keep us safe! Thank you to all who have helped make these months so wonderful!

Frau McClung reports that the German Club met for "Kaffee und Kuchen" on Ash Wednesday, and instead of enjoying sugary treats on this first day of Lent, baked some traditional German pretzels. They turned out beautifully!

Students in Mrs. Dues's level 3 Culinary Arts class concluded their baking final last week. The class selected the theme "movies" for the decorating aspect of the final. Students in each group were required to sketch out their design on paper and list the ingredients and supplies they would need to complete their cake. Students used their class period over three days to make and decorate the cakes. They created a Tangled-themed cake made with layers of chocolate and vanilla cake with hidden chocolate chips inside; a Spiderman-themed cake made from layers of chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache; and a Ratatouille-themed cake made from layers of vanilla cake, buttercream frosting, and fondant-covered rice crispy treats. The final cake was from the movie The Shining. It consisted of chocolate cake and buttercream icing. Baking and pastry skills are difficult to master. We are proud of the students for taking on this challenge and proud of their work!

Last week was Read Across America Week, a week created in 1998 to promote reading. The week begins each year on March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday. To kick off the week this year, high school National Honor Society students visited the various elementary schools in the county to read to students. Students, little and big, enjoyed the day! Congratulations to Mrs. Dues and the NHS students on this successful event. (More photos can be seen in additional posts.)

Back in January, students in Mrs. Gelzleichter's Spanish III and IV classes took a quick trip to eat lunch at El Camino. El Camino's Mr. Bravo graciously described ingredients traditionally used in Mexican cooking and explained some of the more common, authentic Mexican dishes. It looks like a good time was had by all! (One additional photo is included in the comments.)

Mrs. Mundt-Davis reports that some Spanish club members recently got together to work with chocolate! Through this activity, the group learned about the history and cultural significance of chocolate as well as the process of chocolate making. The best part was putting together their own chocolates to enjoy. They are also pleased to share their discovery that chocolate-covered Takis are a tasty treat!

Look how lovely these boards are! Mr. Slavik's 8th-grade students recently created beautiful cutting boards as part of their introduction to measuring and using power tools. These boards will surely be cherished by families for years to come. Great job, kids!

Students in Mrs. Dues's level 3 Culinary Arts class recently completed a Food Truck Pitch project. Students were challenged with creating a 3D model of their food truck along with a PowerPoint "pitch" presentation. The presentations included information such as the company logo, mission statement, the 4 Ps of marketing, a menu with prices, and a cost sheet for ingredients. Then they had to make one menu item to serve to the administrators to dine on as they took a look at the students' presentations. One group created a Mongolian beef and rice dish. Another group made chicken quesadillas, and a third group made an American classic--bacon cheeseburger and fries. Lastly, one group pitched a breakfast truck and served a breakfast sandwich and frappe. All of the food was made from scratch by the students (from the homemade fries to the frappe that involved students learning how to steep coffee). Everything was delicious, and we are all very proud of their hard work!

Happy Monday! Yesterday we received this wonderful message, and we thought it would be perfect to share this note of positivity to get your Monday started: "I was at the Homestead High School Show Choir Comp this weekend. Several of us moms were passing by and saw your girls lined up and ready to go! We were so excited for the Madeline theme and asked if we could take their picture. They were so sweet & gracious and posed for us. Then, we had to go find a seat to see their show! They did not disappoint either, it was fantastic! Just wanted to share this with you and some of the pictures we took! Love, the Fairfield Moms!" We would like to thank the Fairfield Moms for the compliment and the cute pics. We are proud of these young ladies for their outstanding representation of Jay County Jr.-Sr. High. #PatriotPride
