It's a great day to be a Patriot! Members of Mrs. Poole's Health Occupations classes and the HOSA club reached out to the students and faculty to help them fill stockings for residents at Crown Pointe Assisted Living in Portland. With donations of money and items from the staff, advisory classes, and clubs, they were able to gift stockings to all of the residents at the facility and purchase a new coffee pot and a new large-print bingo game. The residents were so grateful and appreciative. Thanks to everyone who donated! Great job Mrs. Poole, students, and all who participated. 'Tis the season of giving!

Students in the Business Management/Accounting Pathway recently had the opportunity to earn certification in Microsoft PowerPoint. The MOS (MicroSoft Office Specialist) Exams are industry-recognized certifications that many employers look for when hiring and promoting. In addition to future employment, several colleges will grant college credit if students become certified in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. The students will have the opportunity to certify in Word and Excel next semester. Congratulations to Joseph Belda, Gavin Clay, Marisa Gallegos-Vargas, Blake Kahlig, Isabella Puusepp, Kade Sommers, Kenzie Tobe, Preston Watkins, Robert Weekley, and Valiant Willoughby!

Mr. Keller's Calculus class recently completed a project that required them to construct a box from an index card. The goal was to maximize the number of Skittles the box could hold. Students used optimization to figure out the size of the square that they should cut from each corner of the index card to construct a box with the highest volume. What a fun and creative way for students to see the practical applications of advanced mathematics! Great job, Mr. Keller and students!

The consolidation of the high school and junior high has led to some great benefits, including the broadening of opportunities for our junior high students and the ability for junior high and high school teachers to collaborate. Here is a fantastic example of a collaborative learning activity implemented by one junior high and one high school teacher. Eighth-grade students in Mrs. Price's Family and Consumer Science class were tasked with creating children's books that would be read to Mrs. Dues's afternoon Preschool class as a part of the eighth graders' Child Development/Childcare Unit. The book project turned out well, and the “big friends” seemed to enjoy the reading time as much as the “little friends”!

Students and staff are embracing the holiday spirit at Jay County Jr-Sr High! First, Industrial Arts students completed a Christmas Tree project. They incorporated blueprint reading with measurements and angles to assemble and finish their trees using power tools. Next, Mrs. Brockman's 8th-grade math students made 3D snowflakes. Each 8th grader made one snowflake. The snowflakes were hung as decorations around the Instructional Media Center. Great job, kids and teachers! Stay tuned for more holiday fun!

Students in Mrs. Hess's algebra class recently enjoyed a fun, hands-on lesson. Students attempted a series of shots at a basket from different distances and recorded their results. They then graphed their data in Desmos, an online graphing program, to explore lines of best fit and correlation. Great job Mrs. Hess and students!

Did you know that junior high students now have the opportunity to take foreign language classes at Jay County Jr.-Sr. High? This has been one of many benefits of the junior/senior high consolidation. Recently, some foreign language students, including junior high students, had an opportunity to hear from Destiny McManus, last year's Jay County Lilly Scholarship recipient. Destiny recently spoke to Mrs. Gelzleichter's 8th-grade Spanish I, Spanish III, Spanish IV, and 7th-grade Exploratory World Language classes. Destiny attends IU East where she is involved in many activities, including serving as president of the Honors Club. She is pursuing a career in dentistry, specifically orthodontia. Destiny spoke to the classes about the differences between junior high/high school and college, including what a GPA means in college compared to high school, the increased level of difficulty in college, how to participate in activities, how college credits earned in high school transfer, and how placement tests work, specifically in regard to Spanish. She explained that students who take four years of Spanish and receive their college credits do not have to take a placement test while students who take three years or do not receive college credit do have to take the placement test. The classes were very enthusiastic with many questions and felt they understood much better what it takes to get scholarships, whether or not they will need to take placement tests, and what to expect once they are in college. Thank you, Destiny, for sacrificing your only free day to talk to our classes!

Please share this important reminder for parents/guardians of seniors: After Dec. 1, the price for caps and gowns will increase. Students were given ordering information on October 13, and have been given several reminders at school. Orders can be placed at https://www.herffjones.com/. On the website, select the "GRADUATION" tab and choose "SHOP YOUR HIGH SCHOOL." After entering Jay County Jr-Sr High, choose "SHOP GRAD PRODUCTS." From there, click on "GRAD GEAR and APPAREL." You will need to scroll to the bottom of the page to find the cap and gown unit. Students are welcome to borrow appropriately-sized caps and gowns from previous graduates. (Boys wear blue/girls wear red.) Students who will be borrowing must email Mrs. Stockton to let her know (mstockton@jayschools.k12.in.us). Students who are borrowing will need a tassel. These can be purchased in person at the school when caps and gowns are delivered in April. A specific date has not yet been set. If you will only be purchasing a tassel, do not do it online as the shipping and handling cost is more than the price of the tassel itself. Please email any additional questions to Mrs. Stockton.

Meet this week's Early College Senior Spotlight student--Brenna Haines. Brenna is quite an accomplished student. She excels in leadership, academics, and athletics! She is currently serving as the Student Council president, National Honor Society vice president, and the senior class secretary. She is also a Campus Life Student Leader. In addition to these leadership roles, Brenna also received a four-year varsity volleyball award after completing her senior season. She has also completed three years of varsity tennis. Brenna has received the academic recognition award every year and will have earned 36 college credits by graduation, which will allow her to enter college as a sophomore. She is looking forward to attending Saint Francis University in Fort Wayne where she will enroll in the physical therapist assistant program. On November 1, students in Spanish Club stayed after school to decorate sugar skull cookies in celebration of the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), an important Mexican holiday with rich traditions meant to honor the deceased. Beautiful work, kids! They look too good to eat . . . almost.

It's Early College Senior Spotlight time! Today's highlighted student is Madyson Fraley. Mady certainly keeps herself busy! She is a member of both the National Honor Society and HOSA (a club for future health professionals) and also serves as a student council officer. She is a talented softball player who plays on the school’s varsity team in addition to a year-round travel team. Mady is also a varsity cheerleader. Academically, she is on track to graduate with 64 college credits, which will result in the successful completion of the ICC (Indiana College Core). Her efforts will also earn her an associate's degree from Ivy Tech. Her academic success was recently recognized when she received the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program certificate from College Board. After high school, Mady plans to attend Purdue Fort Wayne to study biochemistry with a goal of attending med school to become a sports medicine surgeon. Please join us in congratulating Madyson Fraley on her many accomplishments!

8th-grade students in Mrs. Price’s Family and Consumer Sciences class recently had the opportunity to prepare baked potatoes for staff members after school prior to the first Parent Teacher Conferences. This was a wonderful way for students to apply their food preparation knowledge and skills. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were excited to prepare a meal for those who are preparing them for their future.

Last month, students in Mrs. Dues's Human Services class spent time learning and talking about how to have both personal and professional success. Discussions focused on what it means to have work/life balance and how one can achieve it. Since stress is such a big roadblock to achieving work/life balance, students learned a few different strategies to cope with or even relieve stress. Each day of class for one week included a different stress-relieving activity, such as taking a walk outside, practicing yoga (pictured below - chair yoga), and trying a mindfulness exercise.
