On November 1, students in Spanish Club stayed after school to decorate sugar skull cookies in celebration of the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), an important Mexican holiday with rich traditions meant to honor the deceased. Beautiful work, kids! They look too good to eat . . . almost.

It's Early College Senior Spotlight time! Today's highlighted student is Madyson Fraley. Mady certainly keeps herself busy! She is a member of both the National Honor Society and HOSA (a club for future health professionals) and also serves as a student council officer. She is a talented softball player who plays on the school’s varsity team in addition to a year-round travel team. Mady is also a varsity cheerleader. Academically, she is on track to graduate with 64 college credits, which will result in the successful completion of the ICC (Indiana College Core). Her efforts will also earn her an associate's degree from Ivy Tech. Her academic success was recently recognized when she received the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program certificate from College Board. After high school, Mady plans to attend Purdue Fort Wayne to study biochemistry with a goal of attending med school to become a sports medicine surgeon. Please join us in congratulating Madyson Fraley on her many accomplishments!

8th-grade students in Mrs. Price’s Family and Consumer Sciences class recently had the opportunity to prepare baked potatoes for staff members after school prior to the first Parent Teacher Conferences. This was a wonderful way for students to apply their food preparation knowledge and skills. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were excited to prepare a meal for those who are preparing them for their future.

Last month, students in Mrs. Dues's Human Services class spent time learning and talking about how to have both personal and professional success. Discussions focused on what it means to have work/life balance and how one can achieve it. Since stress is such a big roadblock to achieving work/life balance, students learned a few different strategies to cope with or even relieve stress. Each day of class for one week included a different stress-relieving activity, such as taking a walk outside, practicing yoga (pictured below - chair yoga), and trying a mindfulness exercise.

Ramses' native language is Spanish. He also speaks English and has successfully tested out of the school corporation's ELL program. Additionally, Ramses is currently enrolled in dual-credit German 3, which is offered through Indiana University's ACP program. Congratulations, Ramses!

It's time for an Early College senior spotlight! This time we get to hear from the student in her own words. "Hi! My name is Zoey Shaneyfelt, a senior at Jay County Jr./Sr. High School. At the end of my senior year, I will have finished the ICC (Indiana College Core) with thirty credits, meaning my freshman year of college will be complete. Besides completing the ICC (which I wasn’t even aware that I had done), I have participated in many activities at JCJSHS and received a couple of mentionable awards. In my 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years, I was an active member of Student Council. In 11th grade, I was also a member of Best Buddies. In my senior year, I was awarded the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award via College Board for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher and my outstanding performance on the PSAT. Although the college I will be attending is undecided, I know I want to major in Elementary Education and earn my bachelor’s (and possibly my master’s) degree. Thank you!" Join us in congratulating and encouraging Zoey as she continues her education. We are proud of you, Zoey!

Happy Halloween! Where does an infamous literary character belong? In the library, of course! Dr. Frankenstein has delivered his creation to the library of Jay County Jr./Sr. High just in time for Halloween! Thank you (or not?) to our librarian, Cathy Fugiett, and assistant librarian, Betty Harris, for letting him in. We sure hope those restraints keep him down!

Yesterday, 49 Early College students and 4 faculty members traveled to Dayton, Ohio, to visit the main campus of Wright State University. It was a gorgeous day for touring the campus and learning about the school's offerings! Did you know that Wright State offers regular, in-state tuition for Jay County residents?

It's a good day to share good news! Command Sergeant Major Steven Bishop is happy to report that our Junior ROTC Raiders placed 9th out of 21 teams at the Indiana State Raider Championships at Camp Atterbury on Saturday. The event was hosted by the Indiana University-Indianapolis Senior ROTC Program. This is an excellent showing for our very young program. The Raider season will wrap up on Saturday at Huntington North. Congratulations and good luck, students! We are proud of you!

We hope our students and staff had a restful and enjoyable fall break. Let's start back with a look at one of our Early College spotlight seniors! Today we are featuring Maggie Dillon. Maggie is a busy young lady! She is a Student Council member, the NHS Treasurer, and Campus Life student leader. Additionally, she has received academic honors recognition in addition to a National German Exam Award. Maggie also excels in athletics as a member of the volleyball and tennis teams. She has earned a three-year varsity award for volleyball and a two-year varsity award for tennis. Maggie is also a prime example of how the Early College program can help students as they prepare for college. Maggie will earn the Indiana College Core, which will enable her to enter college as a sophomore student. She is also working to earn her associate's degree by completing 60 college credits by the end of this school year. Maggie plans to attend Ball State University to major in business while also attending beauty school to become a licensed esthetician. Join us in congratulating and encouraging Maggie Dillon as she finishes up her senior year!

Last week was a busy one at Jay County Jr./Sr. High! Students in grades 9-11 took the PSAT/NMSQT last Wednesday, and Thursday was the last day of the first grading period. Fall sports are wrapping up as well. Meanwhile, teachers and students continue to work hard. As depicted in the photos, 8th-grade students in Mrs. Brockman's math classes worked on graphing lines in different forms. As a review, students had to create a domino train by matching a linear equation with its specific graph. Thanks to Marie Bruggeman for providing photos.

Today, the class of 2024 had an important meeting pertaining to graduation. Our representative from Herff Jones Company provided information about ordering caps and gowns. He will return on Monday, Oct. 23, to collect orders. Students may also order online. Parents, please be aware that the cap and gown unit price will double on Dec. 1. Earlier in the day, the representative met with freshmen about class rings. If you are a parent of a freshman or a senior, be on the lookout for ordering packets that were handed out during these meetings. To place an order online, visit https://highschool.herffjones.com/. An email was sent to seniors after the meeting to help them navigate this process. That email can be found in the comments.

Recently, several 7th and 8th grade students were rewarded with some fun and relaxation time during an advisory period. This is a monthly positive reinforcement program that encourages our junior high students to complete assignments and avoid discipline issues. Join us in congratulating these students and encouraging them to keep it going. Great job, kids!
