Mrs. Dues's cooking classes have been in full swing this school year! Jay County Jr./Sr. High currently offers three levels of cooking courses (Principles of Hospitality, Nutrition, and Culinary Arts). All three levels cook food during their class time once per week. Pictured is our level three Culinary Arts class making a pizza calzone and level two Nutrition class making french toast with a variety of fresh fruits for toppings! The hands-on learning opportunity that these students are getting is priceless. What's even better? They get to eat the delicious fruits of their labor!
It's time to relaunch our Early College senior spotlight series. Look for our first featured senior tomorrow! The Early College students who will be featured are in the process of completing 30 specific college credits by the time they start college next fall. These 30 credits make up the Indiana College Core (ICC). The Indiana College Core enables students to enter any Indiana public college or university as a sophomore, allowing them to complete a degree program more quickly. Perhaps the greatest advantage of earning the ICC is the significant financial benefit. Our 2023 graduates saved $457,706.00 in tuition costs by completing the ICC! Jay County Jr./Sr. High has a new course offering this year at the junior high level. Mr. John McFarland, a certified EMT instructor, is teaching a first-aid course. Students are learning valuable life-long skills while also potentially developing an interest in health-care-related careers. Here, Greg Williams practices using a plunger device to assist an unconscious choking victim. Other students are practicing abdominal thrusts on conscious choking victims while the remaining students work on their CPR skills.
Did you know that the National Honor Society turned 100 years old in 2021? We are proud to have an active chapter that continually upholds the organization's guiding principles of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The chapter is sponsored by Mrs. Olivia Dues. Recently, in fulfillment of the "service" principle, NHS members assisted at the local Cancer Cruise event hosted by the Jay County Cancer Society. The chapter also collected $100 during school lunch mods that they were able to present to the Cancer Society along with a Sunshine Box purchased from Sunshine Boutique which will be donated by the JCCS to someone in need. It's hard to believe we have almost completed the first 9 weeks of school for the year, and fall break is right around the corner! Our students are growing and learning every day. Here is yet another great example. Mrs. Loy's 8th grade Intro to Ag classes finished up their FFA unit by putting their knowledge of official dress to use. Students partnered up to create a human outline. They then had to draw the official FFA dress on their life-sized person based on whether they were dressing a boy or girl. The students got to be creative and demonstrate their knowledge about this aspect of the FFA organization.
Gamifying a lesson is a great way to engage students. Sometimes, there are even prizes. (Candy, anyone?) Similar to Mrs. Clott's accounting class, Mr. Keller uses games in his Algebra I class. Here, Mr. Keller's students are playing Jenga as a fun way to practice solving equations. Students are learning how to work through problems while also learning that math can be fun!

Check out this cool activity! Students in Mrs. Clott's Fundamentals of Accounting class recently played Accounting Monopoly. Mrs. Clott reports that it was a fun activity that she will continue to implement periodically throughout the school year. We suspect that these students will get better and better at the game as their accounting knowledge and skills increase. Great job, Mrs. Clott and and students!
Did you know that Jay County Jr./Sr. High School has its very own coffee shop? Jay Cafe is operated by members of the Business Professionals of America (BPA) club. The funds raised allow these students to participate in BPA competitions and events. Currently, the shop is open on Tuesdays and Fridays before school. Students and staff have the opportunity to purchase flavored lemonades as well as cold brew and hot coffee beverages. Last Friday marked the opening day for the 23-24 school year.
Are you the parent, friend, or family member of a high school senior? If you know of a senior who is interested in attending college next year, remind them that next week (Sept. 25-29--Monday through Friday only) is College Go Week! The most significant benefit of College Go Week is the ability to save money on application fees. Check out the photo to see which Indiana schools will be waiving application fees. For students who wish to apply to multiple schools, this opportunity could result in substantial savings!
Our students experience dynamic and engaging lessons every day at Jay County Jr./Sr. High, and we are proud to share them with the community. This week, students in Frau McClung's German 3 (IU dual credit) class used their new German vocabulary in a series of stations related to the 5 senses. They had the opportunity to listen, smell, see, taste, and feel all about food! (We think most students would agree that a lesson that includes food is the best type of lesson!)
The following students were recognized by College Board and presented with the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award for their outstanding achievements by having a 3.5 GPA or higher and had an outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Jay County Jr./Sr. High is thrilled to announce that after a years-long absence, Construction Trades has returned! The program is being taught by Mr. Brian Dishman. Recently, Mr. Dishman took his junior and senior students to visit the Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Center in Greenwood. While there, he was able to capture images of his students as they were engaged in the learning process. We are proud to have added this program to our wide selection of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and look forward to watching students flourish in the field.
As part of our continuing homecoming festivities, each advisory class was asked to decorate their classroom door according to the board game theme. Students and staff put together some spirited displays this week! Here are just a handful of the many great doors.

It's homecoming week "rhyme without a reason" dress up day. Pairs or groups dress up as things that rhyme but have no real relationship otherwise: cheese grater and Darth Vader, lobster and mobster. Can you guess what these pairs are? The answers will be posted later in the day.
