Check out this cool learning opportunity that students recently had in Mrs. Kerri Wright's junior high Life Skills classroom! The class had been discussing the scientific method and how to form and test a hypothesis. Students made observations about a gummy worm before they put it in water for 24 hours. The next day, students made observations about the gummy worm's appearance after the 24-hour mark. Some even taste-tested the water. Students made observations regarding the appearance, smell, taste, and texture before and after the experiment.

The school year is back in full swing for the Early College program! Students in Mr. Keller's freshman EC class and Mrs. Stockton's sophomore EC class have already had four guest speakers. Our IVY Tech partner institution liaison, Tammy Herschberger, came to help students navigate the process of completing the ICC program. She shared a new digital platform for students to track their progress. Additionally, Ms. Herschberger has been helping all of our IVY Tech dual credit students register for their in-person and online classes. Then, Chief Keith Cockrell from the US Navy came to encourage students to set goals and consider options for their future. Finally, two recent Jay graduates--Lauren Brewster and Destiny McManus--Zoomed with the students to speak about what it has been like getting started as college students and how they were able to successfully transfer their ICC credits. Stay tuned for more updates from the EC program. In the meantime, take a look at how students can save money and time by earning the Indiana College Core. https://www.ivytech.edu/programs/special-programs-for-students/transfer-options/start-as-a-sophomore-pathway-indiana-college-core/

This morning, approximately 50 students from the senior class gathered together to watch the sun rise. This first ever Senior Sunrise was organized by the class officers who plan to bookend the event with a Senior Sunset in the spring. It was a beautiful morning for these Jay County seniors to spend time together creating wonderful senior year memories. After viewing the sunrise, most students headed to Bizy Dips for half price drinks. Thank you to Hannah Long and her crew at Bizy Dips for supporting the class of 2024.

With one more day of school left, let's do one more Early College spotlight! Here is Linda Braun from the math department in her own words: My name is Linda Braun. I teach Quantitative Reasoning at Jay County Junior/Senior High School. I have taught at Jay schools for 12 years. I am originally from Columbia City, IN. I have lived in Celina, OH; Huntington, IN; and Portland, IN. I completed my undergraduate degree in Math Education at Huntington College. I am currently finishing my Master's in Math Education from Indiana Wesleyan University. My husband and I will celebrate our 32nd anniversary this summer with a cruise accompanied by our 4 children, their two spouses, and our granddaughter. I play piano and organ at two local churches and also participate in choir and bell choir. I enjoy cooking, baking, sewing, and camping.

The school year is coming to a close, but there's still a lot to celebrate! Today, we are featuring yet another dual credit teacher, Ms. Meg Mauger. Meg Mauger is a 1985 graduate of Jay County High School who left Indiana to attend Wellesley College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she earned her BA in Economics and spent her junior year studying at the London School of Economics. After working in Chicago at Northern Trust Bank, she became an entrepreneur, opening her own gourmet deli and catering business, Nutmeg's Food & Wine. Five years later, she sold the business and used the money to return to school where she earned a Master's degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan. Meg returned to Jay County in the fall of 2016 to fill a vacancy in the Business Department. Meg says that teaching Personal Finance is her passion, having volunteered to teach this subject in the Denver Public School system prior to her return. She wishes every student at JCJSH would choose to take this course during their junior or senior year. Currently, Meg teaches Introduction to Engineering and Civil Engineering and Architecture for Ivy Tech Dual credit as well as two AP Computer Science courses: Principles of Computing and Computer Science A Java Programming. In her free time, Meg enjoys playing golf and bridge, skiing, traveling, and spending time with family.

Yesterday, as part of our Early College Week activities, 52 Early College program students visited the Marion Campus of Ivy Tech. Students learned about Ivy Tech degree programs, including forensic science, nursing, STEM, and agriculture. Students also participated in activities related to soft skills and mental health. It was a great day for these students as they continue to gain understanding of how the Indiana College Core can help them save both time and money in college. Special thanks to our Ivy Tech liaison Tamara Herschberger who works with our students to choose and sign up for their dual credit classes. She was an awesome host!
