We love collaboration, and what could be better than our high school students working alongside our preschool students? Recently, Mrs. Dues's cooking students and Mrs. Myers's preschool classes teamed up to make some yummy puppy chow!

Recently, students in Mrs. Daniels's Medical Interventions class tapped into their ingenuity to complete a lesson. Students were tasked with creating a prosthetic hand with which they were then required to pick up a Styrofoam cup. Depicted is student Mackenzie Weesner demonstrating her prosthetic hand creation in action!

How cool is this?! Junior high students in Miss Muhlenkamp's PE classes recently participated in an archery unit (safely, of course). What a unique PE experience for our students!

Birds are chirping and temps. have been warmer--sure signs that spring is almost here! With that, spring sports, a trip to the nation's capital, the FFA banquet, prom, a band trip, awards programs, and many more activities and events are drawing near. In many cases, planning is underway. This photo shows our junior high National Honor Society officers and leaders planning the spring dance! We can't wait to continue sharing all the great things that will happen at Jay County Jr.-Sr. High throughout the last few months of the school year. Stay tuned!

Even more photos!

Additional Read Across America Day photos.

Last Friday, March 1, several members of the Jay County Jr.-Sr. High National Honor Society volunteered to read to students in the various Jay County elementary schools for Read Across America Day, which is observed on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Jay County students from the smallest to the tallest enjoyed the day, and we hope you will enjoy seeing the photos (multiple posts). As March is National Reading Month, we encourage our Jay County families to make reading a habit!

Last weekend, two Jay County Jr.-Sr. High students earned gold medals at the Indiana State School Musical Association (ISSMA) state-level solo and ensemble contest. Please join us in congratulating senior Hannah Boggs and junior Emma LeMaster on their success. Congratulations, ladies! We are proud of you!

Parents of 8th-grade students attending Washington, D.C., we will have our final meeting on Tuesday, March 5th in the auditorium at 6 pm.

The JCHS Academic Team competed in the Eastern Indiana Academic League´s Invitational at Knightstown High School in Knightstown on Monday, February 26, 2024.
Of 17 competing schools from East Central Indiana, Jay County placed in the top 3 in 4 disciplines, earning a first-place plaque in Math, second-place ribbons in Fine Arts, and third-place ribbons in both English and Social Studies. The Science team narrowly missed the top 5 with a sixth-place finish. Congratulations to the Academic Team!

Six Jay County students participated in the Academic World Quest at the University of Indianapolis this past Saturday. The competition is sponsored annually by the World Affairs Councils of America and tests students' knowledge of world politics, economics, and geography with the goal of promoting world peace.
Congratulations to the team of Tinatin Japaridze, Jovana Markovic, Cameran Paxson, and Isabella Puusepp for placing third and winning a $250 cash prize for the school at the Academic World Quest. Great job, students!

Check out the very cool things happening in Mr. McFarland's 8th-grade First Aid class! Students have been learning about bloodborne pathogens and how healthcare workers use PPE to protect themselves from becoming ill. Students find this interesting because they don't expect the equipment to be so uncomfortable. They also don't realize that correct handwashing is tough! During the lesson, a special lotion is applied to students' hands before they wash their hands as they normally do. Afterward, a black light is used to indicate where they didn't wash the "glow germ" lotion off. Then they learn to wash their hands correctly!
In the accompanying photos, Brayden O'Brian shows his "clean" hands. Brayden O'Brian and Parker Moore are rocking the gowns and gloves. The photo from the rear of the classroom features guest speaker Contessa Stilts, Assistant 911 Director for Jay County. Contessa visited the classroom to explain the process of becoming a 911 dispatcher to the class. She played some cool games with the students to help them understand how the job works. Thank you to Contessa Stilts and all of our community members who have volunteered their time to help our students grow. Great job to all!

We would like to congratulate the FFA organization on a successful FFA Week celebration last week. It was a jam-packed week, including dress-up days, decorations, lunchtime activities, a staff breakfast, basketball game events, visits to elementary schools, and a truck drive-in. Great job, FFA students, officers, and faculty advisors!

Ms. Donna Dayton, one of our 7th-grade Language Arts teachers, recently shared the following report on the great work her students have been doing. "We are revisiting character analysis through the short story "Zebra" and the novel The Outsiders. We are also working on a figurative language review." The students completed a mobile project during the first grading period and a diorama during the 2nd grading period. Great job, Ms. Dayton and students!

Frau McClung's German classes spent the beginning of last week learning about the special time before Lent and Ash Wednesday called "Karneval," "Fasching," or "Fastnacht" depending on where one lives in the German-speaking countries. This holiday is much like "Mardi Gras" in the French-speaking world, except that it lasts a little longer. The highlight of the holiday is celebrated on "Rosemonday," the Monday before Ash Wednesday, when many German cities host parades where people are dressed up in costumes or wear special masks. Mrs. McClung's students made special masks in their classes to celebrate! Can you find your student?

Check out this cool opportunity some of our junior high students recently had! Students in 7th and 8th grade Industrial Arts classes completed introductory woodworking projects. Students were given the option of building a birdhouse or creating a simple plan and executing an original project. Great job, kids!

Last week, FFA and Student Council joined forces to sponsor a food drive featuring a contest among the first-period classes. The winning classes will receive a free breakfast. Jay County Jr.-Sr. High students contributed almost $1,300 dollars and brought in 1,300 food items for Second Harvest Food Bank. This is $600 more than last year!
For the junior high contest, Mrs. Mauger’s class won with Mrs. Denney’s class coming in second place. For the High School, the winning team was Mr. Linville's & Mrs. Tillman’s first-period classes! Coming in a close second place was Mr. Millspaugh’s class, and in third place was the team of Mrs. Reece's and Ms. Walter’s classes. Thank you to all of the students and staff who made this event successful!

Jay County Jr.-Sr. High offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to be involved in extra-curricular activities. From Drama Club to FFA, Robotics to E-sports, German Club to Academic Team, athletics, and so many more--there is something for everyone! For example, these Spanish Club members recently spent time creating Spanish-language valentines and enjoying a time of fellowship. Pictured from left to right are Isabel Castro Martell, Emily Smith, Ellie Darnell, Alexa Bravo, and Melanie Cavanzon. Beautiful work, ladies!

Please join us in wishing our School Resource Officer (SRO) Cody Jessee a very happy SRO Appreciation Day! Thank you, Officer Jessee, from the students and staff of Jay County Jr.-Sr. High! Miss Kendra Muhlenkamp's junior high health classes are currently studying Nutrition. Yesterday's lesson pertained to body image with a learning objective of being able to demonstrate skills for improving body image. For the activity, students cut out hearts and wrote at least three things they thought positively about themselves. What a great way to integrate the learning standards with Valentine's Day to make the lesson engaging for the students! Great job, Miss Muhlenkamp and students!
