Happy Valentine's Day! Valentine's Day is an EVENT within junior and senior high schools! These tables have been cleared and refilled multiple times today. Our secretaries, especially our front office secretaries Jennifer Hummel and Danielle McGill, deserve a huge pat on the back and many thanks for their work in organizing the holiday chaos while also keeping up with the regular chaos. Thank you, ladies!

The Jay County Winter Guard is in the midst of their competitive season, appearing on January 27th at Snider High School with a 3rd place finish and taking the caption award in General Effect and Design Analysis. The Guard also competed at Anderson High School on February 3rd, again finishing in 3rd place and taking the caption in Movement. The show titled "Hope You're Okay" remembers special friends who have impacted our lives. For more information about catching the guard in action visit ihscga.org.

Our student council and FFA organization are teaming up to sponsor a food drive next week. If your family is able to help, please encourage your Jay County Jr.-Sr. High student/s to participate.

There are only 70 school days left in the school year! Our teachers continue to work hard to ensure that each day is filled with meaningful learning activities. These photos show students in Mr. Miller's Chem 2 class, one of our many dual-credit course offerings, working in the lab to determine the formula of magnesium oxide. With Mr. Miller's guidance, we're sure they figured it out! Pictured are Zion Beiswanger, Ryne Goldsworthy, Garrett Hime, and Isaac Miller.

Mrs. Dues's Nutrition students recently completed an engaging, hands-on lesson to help them learn about the digestive system. They were tasked with recreating the human digestive system using different food items within the classroom.

Congratulations to Evelyn, Brooklynn, Kaitlyn, and Abby for achieving top reader status! Keep up the great work!

Recently, local businesswomen Lacy Heinrichs and Alivia Rowles of Beauty Bar 216 in Portland graciously volunteered their time to speak to Mrs. Price's Jr. High FCS class about the importance of hair and nail care for proper hygiene and confidence. We at Jay County Jr.-Sr. High always appreciate our community members who so willingly support our students and teachers. Thank you Lacy and Alivia!

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: gamifying learning is a fantastic way to engage this generation of students. Mrs. Mundt-Davis utilizes this strategy in her classes. Pictured are her seventh-grade Exploratory Languages students playing Uno to practice the Spanish words for colors and numbers. With each card played, students were required to say the number and color on the card in Spanish! Similarly, her Spanish 2 students recently played Battleship (Batalla Naval) to practice verb conjugations.

Our show choirs opened their competition season last Saturday at the Ball State Mid-America Show Choir Competition. Both groups placed very well. Just Treble, the all-girls group, placed first runner-up and earned the People's Choice and Best Vocals caption awards. Patriot Edition, the mixed choir, placed second runner-up and earned the Best Crew caption award. Congratulations to our choral director, Mrs. Susan Denney, and all of the students involved! Best wishes as you continue your competition season!

Make your plans to attend this weekend!

Let's brighten up this gloomy January week with another ray of senior sunshine! This week's Early College Senior Spotlight student is Hannah Laux. Last semester Hannah finished the final two classes required for her completion of the Indiana College Core. The ICC will allow Hannah to register for college as a sophomore. Hannah is a member of both Just Treble and Patriot Edition show choirs and currently serves as president of Patriot Edition. Earlier this year Hannah was accepted into the All-State Honors Show Choir. She is also a member of the student council, National Honor Society, and the swimming and diving team. After high school, Hannah will be attending Ball State University to major in Social Studies Education with a concentration in geography. Hannah has earned admittance to the Honors College and is a current finalist for Ball State's Whitinger Scholarship, "the signature scholarship of the Honors College." Please join us in congratulating and encouraging Hannah as she finishes her senior year!

Jay County Jr-Sr High students have many opportunities to take vocational classes and even earn some certifications. This year, we have been fortunate to add Construction Trades back into our course offerings. It's fun to see the growth of the students in this program. These photos show Mr. Dishman's students' progress as they work on a mockup wall unit, a small-scale project consisting of wood framing and drywall. Students cut out an electrical box with a drywall router and patched holes using drywall tape and mud to work on their drywall finishing skills as well. Great job, Mr. Dishman and students! Continue with your hard work!

Check out these Jay County Jr-Sr High students experiencing a truly interactive learning opportunity. Here, Mrs. Daniels's Human Body Systems class is seen dissecting a sheep's heart, trachea, and lungs. These students are studying how the respiratory and cardiovascular systems work together. This is the definition of "learning by doing!"
